Art in the Park

During the gallery rebuild, visitors to Central Park in Plymouth will be able to see a series of art works over the summer as part of ‘Art in the Park’, provided by Plymouth City Council Arts Unit and Plymouth College of Art.
A series of vibrant high quality art works has been commission as part of Art in Central Park, the Life Centre Programme of Public Art and Engagement.
Through a curatorial partnership with Hannah Jones, Curator of the Viewpoint Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, a series of site specific interventions have been chosen to stimulate debate and interest.
Hannah said: “Plymouth College of Art is delighted to work on a project which makes art accessible to all. The Viewpoint gallery’s programme seeks to bring artists from around the globe to Plymouth, both to exhibit and share their ideas with the public, including our students, so I’m delighted to curate this project which will allow many more people to see great works of art.”
Plymouth City Council and Plymouth College of Art are working in partnership on the programme which will see artists take inspiration from the park using its resources; the trees, open spaces, pathways and hoardings.
Current project: Jemma Egan Top Dog
Top Dog aim’s to establish a hierarchy of the regular canine visitors to Central Park inspired by the game Top Trumps. Jemma will walk with her dog Jeannie, meeting the other dogs and their owners and asking key questions in order to obtain scores for each dog as well as taking their photograph. The questions will have an emphasis on the individual dog by name and personality rather than by breed; so any dog could end up as ‘Top Dog’ rather than the largest or strongest.
Top Dog will result in individual packs of playing cards and a set of large ‘poster’ cards that will be launched at an event to be scheduled in June.
Art In Central Park is a two year programme of Public Art and Engagement developed by the Arts Unit to link in with the Life Centre Development. Top Dog is the next in a series of commissions that will be taking place from April – October 2010 developed in partnership with Plymouth College of Art.
