Drawing By Numbers
ABC Diploma in Foundation Studies Art, Design, Media
Student Group Exhibition
Tues 11 December 2007 - Sat 5 January 2008
Drawing By Numbers is an exploratory stage project that was undertaken over the first six weeks of the Foundation Studies Course. Students made a portable ‘still life’ (based on number forms), which was then drawn from in a variety of media.
At this stage, students are encouraged to speed up their production and loosen their approach to drawing and generating work. Importantly, the box was changed every week - linking with the overarching theme for each week if the project.
The formal elements of line, negative space, tone, contrast, colour and composition were each used for each week’s theme. After the six week project, all students have a good grasp of these formal elements and can handle a variety of media to ‘draw’ with - forming the building blocks for the rest of the course.
The Foundation Studies course is undertaken after A Levels or National Diploma to help students build a portfolio for Higher Education interview. It also helps students decide what type of HE course to apply for if they are unsure or want to try new things out.
Students work in any medium (including photography, painting, 3D, ceramics, print, computers, fashion, graphics, textiles and many more) but are encouraged to mix materials and ideas in challenging and new ways - trying things out in an experimental and hard-working atmosphere.
