Staff summer takeover
Concrete Knowledge
The artists’ intention is to reshape the gallery’s function for the duration of the exhibition in order to interrogate postmodern systems of production and consumption. The two installations aim to examine attitudes towards and relationships with, domestic scale textiles and food production against the backdrop of current, advanced capitalist systems.
Nicky Gilmour: Summer Garden.
The work will explore ecological production possible at this indoor location, within the gallery. The work will be dependent on the physical constraints of the gallery, which is essentially a glass sided box on the East and West elevations. Available light and temperature will become the system parameters. Using the convention of the winter garden, to sit amongst plants under glass, the growing space will ‘float’ within the gallery, similar in scale to the interior of a domestic working greenhouse. Successful sowings will be conducted on site and observed within the five weeks of the exhibition.
Nicola Curtis: Visible Mending.
My intention is to subvert the hierarchy of objects. I propose interventions in the form of darning garments or textiles. Within the gallery I shall create a domestic space/corner, I invite the public to present their garments or textile objects for mending. Offering tea and conversation I shall mend the holes. The mends are intentionally visible, embellished and obvious. The results are documented and over the course of the event a body of knowledge accrues. Taking time to reflect on our belongings and acknowledge their history shall create a space in which to reflect on their narratives.
Discussion days: The artists will be present on Mondays 3, 10, 17 & 24 August 10 – 2 or by appointment:
Closing event: Thursday 3 Sept 1 – 3pm
