Mary Hurrell

Mary Hurrell

Wed 9 April - Sat 19 April 2008

This exhibition brings together a number of Mary Hurrell’s videos, drawings and sculptural body-adaptations in her first solo exhibition.

Hurrell describes her work as “sculpturally performative”. She works with sculpture, live performance, video and drawing, using materials such as wax, plastics, rubber, ribbons and satin to explore emotional and physical states.

“For me colour and material are very important - they are my language. I chose materials that have a sensuality, by this I mean that they make the viewer feel them with the eye.”

“I chose materials that speak for themselves.”

As Hurrell moulds and forms apparatus for the body, the physical and material merge through the action - creating layers, textures of sound and movement.  These explorations into feeling and sensation aim to communicate viscerally so that the viewer relates to the work physically.

“The live work Ive made can be very intense for me, but I do not attempt to entertain or perform. I think of these performances more as live sculpture, they need space.”

Mary Hurrell graduated from Brighton University with a BA in Performance and Visual Art in 2004. She has shown work at various performance festivals, such as, Expo, OMSK, and PL:AY. Hurrell has exhibited at galleries, such as, Terrace Gallery, South London Gallery and various open studio exhibitions.

She lives and works in London.
